Hello, Friends! Who is ready for some homemade treats? Long before I started making cards (and before I had kids), I used to spend an obscene amount of time making and decorating cookies to give to friends/family as holiday gifts. It was very labor intensive, but it was a labor of love…similar to card making! So, when I saw this new Christmas Cookies die set from Tim Holtz and Sizzix, I had to have it.

Process
When I used to decorate cookies, the most beautiful ones by far were my snowflake cookies. Making these die cut cookies was definitely less laborious than making the real thing, but it still involved a lot of repetitive steps. For each of the cookies themselves, I stacked 3 die cuts of Kraft card stock. The color is quite similar to the real sugar cookies that I made. For the icing, I die cut a lot of layers out of white card stock, as well as two different shades of blue card stock. The base layers of icing consist of two stacked die cuts, and the intricate snowflake shapes in the middle are also double stacked.

I glued all of the icing layers together, and then I heat embossed with clear embossing powder. To do this, I simply laid the die cuts on a clean piece of paper, pressed my Versamark ink pad directly onto the die cuts, transferred them into a coffee filter where I could cover them with embossing powder, and then finally heat them with my heat tool. I did this twice to make the icing really shiny and smooth.

I will say that heat embossing all of those icing layers was quite a bit of work, especially given that I burned one with my heat tool and had to cut a bunch more layers! If it had been just the cookie part, I may have kept it because it really did look like it got burned in an oven. It would have been a lot easier and faster to just cover them with Glossy Accents, but I really wanted each layer of icing to look like it had been piped separately. Once the icing layers were finished, I glued them onto the Kraft cookie bases

I also clear heat embossed the “Sweet” sentiment, which comes from the now-retired “Sweet as Pie” Die-namics set by My Favorite Things. The die actually spells “Sweetie,” but I cut off the end. I thought the swirly font made it look like it had been piped on, especially since the S ended up having to be a bit crooked in order to fit the sentiment that I had already stamped in the wrong place – lol. That “Christmas Wishes” sentiment comes from Lawn Fawn’s “Sprinkled with Joy” stamp set.

I adhered all of my elements onto a mini slimline Kraft card base measuring 3.5″ x 6.5″. To finish the card, I added some white enamel dots. I am so in love with how this card turned out. They really do look like the cookies that I used to make, although the real things were bigger and definitely more fattening!

As always, thank you for joining me today. Leave a comment and let me know what your favorite holiday treat is.

Wishing you all a crafty day!

Allison

  1. Love it! Former accountant also that still makes tons of cookies to give as gifts (that includes a cookie card!). I like this technique and may have to try it on a future card!

    1. Thank you so much, Angela. Hooray for former accountants! I do not make cookies anymore, at least not to the extent that I did. Once I had kids, I branched into cake pops, which are really fun to make.

  2. Beautiful and they look good enough to eat ! Wouldn’t have thought to use clear embossing powder on the icing ! Very clever idea !!! Thanks for sharing your tips.

At a friend’s wedding in Feb, instead of cake she had decorated sugar cookies that went along perfectly with snowy theme. This card brought back memories of that day.
